4 Most Common Reasons Why Your Car's Heat Isn't Working
When your car’s heater isn’t working, the problem is often simple and easy to fix. Here are the four most common reasons and the symptoms of each:
1. Heat Isn’t Turned On
Sometimes the issue is just the climate controls being set incorrectly or the fan speed turned too low. Double-check the temperature dial, fan setting, and air direction controls.
2. Coolant Level Low
Your heater relies on hot engine coolant to warm the cabin, so low coolant can stop the heat from working. This could be caused by a leak in the radiator, hoses, or water pump, as it requires a significant amount of coolant loss before the heat stops working.
3. Thermostat Stuck Open
If the mechanical thermostat is stuck open, the engine won’t reach normal operating temperature, so the heater can’t produce hot air. This often causes the temperature gauge to stay unusually low, and the heat may only start working after extended driving.
4. Heater Core Clogged or Leaking
A clogged heater core restricts the flow of hot coolant, reducing or eliminating heat output, which can sometimes be resolved with a coolant flush service. A leaking heater core can also cause foggy windows or a sweet smell inside the car, sometimes even making its way onto the interior carpets and creating damp spots under the dashboard.
